Vegan does not always mean healthy.

I understand how totally confusing the food scene can be right now. There are recipes and all kinds of people out there telling us what is healthy and what is not. Should you eat eggs and cheese or the vegan food versions. What is the difference between vegetarian food choices and vegan food choices? There is lots of information on how to be vegan or vegetarian or this is the way you should eat.

One recent example that just got me a little boiled was a vegan Christmas cookie recipe that taunted how phenomenal these vegan cookies tasted. As an example, there was this so called vegan cookie recipe had white flour, white sugar, processed chocolate chips and the only thing vegan in the entire recipe is the butter which is some off-the-wall saturated fat alternative. Everyone please be careful!

I don’t disagree with having a little bit of flexibility in your diet. After all, I eat fish and eggs but at the end of the day it’s about being healthy and living a whole-food plant-based lifestyle. A whole-food plant-based lifestyle means doing everything you can to eliminate those foods that science has proven degrade the health of the body – like white flour. There is nut flours and oat flours.  There is all kinds of alternatives and all we have to do is start to play around a bit with them to find better things to incorporate in our diets.

Chocolate chips? OK go for the dark ones. Or a real nice cocoa that’s chunked up. Make sure that it is organic and not filled with a bunch of processed ingredients.

To summarize, eating vegan foods takes caution and careful scrutiny. A lot of the vegan foods are over processed strange combination of foods or  representations of foods that are in the standard American diet. Honestly regular grass fed organic cheese versus vegan cheese? I’ll take the regular grass fed organic cheese any day. It’s all about reading the labels and understanding what you are eating. That’s where the Sprouted Green website and app comes into play. It strives to help people understand how to live a scientifically proven evidence-based nutritious lifestyle.

Enjoy the holidays!
