Social situations can be challenging when you feel like you may not conform to the norm but living a healthy plant-based diet is a choice you made for you and your health. Stick to your lifestyle and do not feel pressure into conforming to others eating habits. Eating habits are just that… habits. They are all different. So is yours and its ok. You are doing it for you.
It can help if you plan ahead. Be aware of the situations you will be in that will involve food and know your choices ahead of time. If it helps google the restaurant menu and plan your meal ahead. Ordering at restaurants can take some planning and some special requests of the chef but it never hurts to ask. I requested a chicken dish be prepared mushroom and the chef was happy to comply.
If you going to a friend or family members house offer to bring something. And if it is a friend or family member then you should feel comfortable reminding them of your food choices and having a quick conversation in advance so that you will be able to enjoy the party or get together just as much as all the other guests.
If someone starts to challenge or question or choices be kind but be firm. You have chosen this lifestyle for you and your health and sharing successes and failures can help others see that you are practicing a new lifestyle and that you are happy to share the journey you have taken so far.
And do not feel guilty, ashamed or defeated if you get into a situation that is difficult. Be kind, be patient and stay positive and look for opportunities to grow in your practice, to help educate others as to the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and remember that by continuing to take of you there will be many more holidays to have and enjoy.
Eating a plant-based lifestyle takes practice and every situation is different. Continue to be creative and incorporate healthy choices into your holidays and you will be successful and have fun doing it. Here is to a happy and healthy holiday season!
